Calne Bike Sculpture “Scaffold Bike”

We’ve all ridden or driven past the “Scaffold Bike,” the large motorcycle sculpture made from scaffolding pipes, which is located at the entrance to Beversbrook Farm on the A3102 towards Hilmarton, just outside Calne. It was built by Toby Welsby (pictured below) back in 2013 and stands approximately 20 feet high. The sculpture was created to commemorate the Calne Bike Meet, our very own annual and free motorcycle event.

Time took its toll and she was looking somewhat tired and faded so on 2nd July 2025, I took on the challenge of giving her a bit of a spruce-up and looked towards Facebook for a few like-minded colleagues who could assist.

Permission was granted from the sculptor and landowner, and we set to work strimming the base area, high-power jet washed away all the old flaky and faded paint.  We laid new membrane with tons of gravel, tightened a few nuts and bolts here and there before giving her a full coat of primer.

Two complete days were spent meticulously painting a couple of coats on each and every bar and joint with the specialized Hammerite Paint, colour matched to Blood Red as per the original livery.  She was finished off with new brake and indicator lenses then fitted with a new VK Graphics Retro Style number plate, signifying her local heritage.

Believe it or not, it only took 7 days spread over a period of 16 (mainly due to the weather) and with a great deal of thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the local community and business, who gave up their free time and provided all the supplies required (including bacon sarnies), we not only achieved our goal but did so, well ahead of schedule and in plenty of time for the 25th Anniversary Calne Town Bike Meet.   She was fully restored back to showroom condition, and gained a fantastic retro number plate to boot, passing her MOT first go.

I know many of you bikers travel from near and far to take a selfie with your own machine with the Sculpture in the background, and now she’s had her new livery, your shots will look even more impressive.

I genuinely had no idea the level of support and response would be as incredible as it was.  Calne People, you truly outdone yourselves. Unfortunately, I can’t mention everyone who pitched in, but you know who you are.

See you in another 12 years.
