A Place 4 Us is a youth club for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities aged 13-24,
based in Calne. The club was initially set up in December 2016, fully funded by Wiltshire Council as a trial
to establish whether there is a local need for this kind of provision. A year later, even though the club was
running at full capacity from the start, further funding was not available. The parents, felt devastated and
could not bring themselves to tell the young people that the club would cease to exist. They therefore formed
a structured committee and have since taken the club forward.
A Place 4 Us is currently able to welcome up to 15 young people and runs for 2 hours, once a week (during term time). It is entirely funded and supported by local businesses, local council and charities.
A Place 4 Us is delivered by an experienced team of youth workers from Barnardo’s who provide a safe and young person centered youth club away from home and away from the formality of school and college. The young people accessing the club are very mixed, some are lively others quiet, and there are a few who have higher level support needs. It is a fantastic group that really helps these young people come out of their shell, and make friends, something a lot of them have not had the chance to do before. The social skills only form part of many things on offer at the club. They like to think that they can offer more than just a place to hang out for the young people, and therefore have made it part of our mission to deliver a programme of life skills. The young people go out into the local community to the shops or nearby park and engage in crafts, sports activities, karaoke, gaming, cooking and baking. Most importantly they feel accepted, included and welcomed whatever their needs and ability… and have fun!
